10 Vegetables that YOU Can Easily Grow in Containers
Spring is on its way, soon to be followed by summer. It’s a great time to start wishing, dreaming and planning for all things gardening and outdoors. And that includes our gardens. This year, you can plan to make a Container Garden that fits on your front step or your back deck. You can even just have them around your yard. You decide. Your Container Garden can be decorative and productive, both at the same time.
Here’s a list of 10 Vegetables that will do well in your containers.
- Tomatoes. This one was probably obvious, but it would be blasphemy not to include it. You can grow big tomatoes, or small ones in your containers, just make darn sure your pot is the right size for what your plant will grow up to be. Also, make sure to include some metal cages or other supports for the plants as they get larger. No one likes droopy tomatoes, am I right?
- Sweet Peppers. Again, using the right size pot for your peppers to thrive in, is key. They won’t take up much space at all, though. If you grow different varieties, or even more than one of the same size, make sure to give them their room.
- Cucumbers. These haven’t typically been grown in containers, but as container gardening grows in popularity, we think it’s a great way to tame them. Cucumbers grown vertically can save you from busting your back when its time to weed them, and even harvest them. Try it this year. If you don’t like it, you can let them grow wildly next year again.
- Kale. This superfood should be considered in your garden planning. It’s so easy to grow. You can grow 5 Kale plants in one 20″ pot. It’s also so easy to harvest, and will keep producing all season long.
- Beets. Beets are a little more particular than some of the other vegetables. Once it is planted, it just wants to be left alone to do its thing. It takes after my teenagers. Make sure you plant your beets in a big enough pot to start out, as it doesn’t enjoy being transplanted down the road. It is however very forgiving of its conditions, so be ready for an abundant harvest. I’m still talking about the beets mind you, not my teenagers. Although, I see many similarities between the two.
